Trustees of Reservations

Castle Hill on the Crane Estate is a stunning seaside estate in Ipswich, MA. The Trustees stewards all 2,100 acres of the estate, which includes Castle Hill, Crane Beach, and the Crane Wildlife Refuge. Castle Hill comprises 165 acres and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1998. The beautiful hilltop, 59-room mansion sits on top of acres of winding salt marshes, miles of barrier beach, diverse natural areas, and beautifully landscaped gardens, all overlooking Ipswich Bay. Several tours are offered to learn all about this magnificent mansion and its grounds. The “Guest of the Crane” tour will make you feel like it’s 1929. You’ll be greeted by staff dressed in period attire and then taken on a tour through the house where you can see how they lived. You may also do a self-guided tour. The Great House provides an elegant backdrop to its famous Grand Alleé – the majestic rolling lawn that stretches half a mile to the bluffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Open to the public to picnic, relax, or roam. It’s common to find yoga classes, kids rolling down the lawn and it’s a popular sledding spot.
